Bantham nr Plymouth is classic river mouth wave in South Devon which works on a big south westerly swell and north easterly winds, there is little else here apart from the beach but it’s one of more picturesque spots in the South West of England. Even if the wind is onshore the beach and river mouth are well worth going for a surf. Bantham picks a lot more swell than most other South Devon beaches and with the university in nearby Plymouth it has a great deal more crowds than most other spots in the region causing tempers to fray, especially in the summer. If crowds are you thing, then Bantham offers excellent banks giving up left and right walls, there are also long waves reeling across the sand bar in front of the river mouth. In the summer season there are lifeguards on duty. South Devon has lots of accommodation to suit every budget and the region has some fabulous hotels, from luxurious country houses to seaside and coastal hotels with magnificent views. If you don’t fancy a hotel holiday, why not try bed and breakfast, or a stay above a pub.
