In Central America in between Nicaragua and Panama. It is one of the few countries without its
own military, and has a reputation as a beautiful, peaceful oasis. It is known
as ‘The Switzerland of Central America.’
What sort of Waves?Costa Rica is not known for its grinding barrelling reef breaks… However it does offer a range of points and beach breaks to suit all levels of surfing. The beach breaks like Witches Rock, Santa Teresa and Playa Hermosa all have good quality waves and can pack a punch on their day. Costa Rica also boasts the world’s longest lefthander in the form of Pavones. The wave can be ridden for over a kilometre and has plenty of fast racey sections, beginners can also hop on as it curls into the bay at the end. Where does the swell come from and when’s best to go?Costa Rica benefits from having two coastlines therefore picking up swells from most directions, and as a result can have consistent waves all year. The best time to go is during our winter, which is their dry season as the winds are predominantly offshore and the waves remain consistently in the 3-6ft range on the wave rich pacific coast. The waves are quieter in the summer but the heavy rain results in some of the more remote Pacific coast spots being inaccessible. This is the time of year to head south towards the Panamanian border for a wealth of uncrowded but manageable surf. What else is there to do?In between surfs you can indulge in some serious chowing-down and relaxing hammock time or go for a walk to do some wildlife spotting. Alternatively you can opt for horse riding, white-water rafting or tree top canopy walking. How do I get there and where do I stay?Have a sniff around on the internet for cheap flights. There are plenty of options flying from Heathrow and Gatwick and one airline that flies from Bristol. You will be charged extra for your boards, but how much depends on whom you fly with. Self-catering saves a bit of dollar and there are plenty of reasonably priced cabinas to stay in.
