Good books about surfing are, in the grand scheme of things, a little thin on the ground. Sure there are shelves full of guide books, improve your surfing and learn how to build a board style publications. Most pro surfers worth their salt have a biography out there too, and of course there are coffee table style products from surf photographers. However when you actually start looking for books about real surfers, every day men and women and the tales of their surfing lives, you'll realise that you've got a job on your hands.

Well now that job just got a little easier with Cold Water Souls, an insightful journey about the local surfers who have pioneered the colder frontiers of our surfing world.  The book by Chris Nelson, is a fascinating mix of tales of discovery to to the local characters from Canada, Japan, Iceland, Scotland, England and the USA, beautifully written and packed with shots, which not only give an insight into the people but also a glimpse of the harsh realities of being a surfer in these cold regions. It doesn't just scratch the surface either, the real men and women who have lived and surfed in all of these areas have been dug out and allowed to tell their own stories, making it the most authoritative book on these places ever written. It's in depth, entertaining and ultimately an essential addition to any surfer's book case. Where other publishers set out to print bland all encompassing books about global surfing, Chris has compiled a book which is refreshing in its quality of both words and photographs and bucks the current trend in the surf world of middle of the road garbage. Simply put, it is the best surfing book to ever come out of the UK and it easily stands shoulder to shoulder with the best pieces of surfing literature on a global level, it should be on every cold water surfers shelf.

my choice is Iceland. Tim Nunn wrote an excellent review. My "cold water" days are over. I only return to the cold when a old surfer passes away and then we do a paddleout.............
