Would you like to be a better surfer? Whether you have just had your first lesson, have been surfing since you were a kid, or are Lord Slater himself, chances are you’re nodding. The hunger to improve is one of the common denominators that bonds all of us surfers, regardless of our ability – that, and sand at the bottom of the bed. In this way, surfing is just like almost every other sport. Unlike almost every other sport, however, if your surfing skills are stagnating, sometimes taking a step back can help you move forward – let me explain. When John Eldridge found his surfing was not progressing, the thing that had the biggest effect on moving it on was getting back on a single fin from the 60s, the board that he had learnt on. Reinvigorated by something that felt new, within a few years he was surfing the heaviest, most perfect barrels of his life on these classic boards. Improving by digging out old equipment isn’t the kind of thing you hear of in tennis or golf, but somehow in surfing it works. Likewise, as progressive as surfing new places is – take Easkey Britton’s story of becoming the first female to surf Iran for example – so is revisiting old spots when Mother Nature decides to throw something special their way. That’s why this issue we’ve got a score from the Lofoten Islands in Norway unlike anything you’ve seen before, and why Al Mackinnon and a small crew were on it when the perfect storm lit up a North East reef brighter than they’d ever seen it. That’s just a taste of what we have in the July Issue, along with jaw-dropping unseen shots from huge Cloudbreak, an Olympic hopeful who surfs, a local’s guide to Bantham and a girl from Leeds with a surf van built for the apocalypse.
