Those cheeky students are at it again… seems like they're not all lounging around in one piece pyjama suits and moaning about word counts - for one weekend in January some of them got off the sofa, put some clothes on and went surfing. This little edit just dropped in, and shows just how hard it is to be a student these days - 48 hours of surfing and partying squeezed into two minutes. The event was almost two weeks ago, but when you're dealing with students, can you expect things to get done on time?! Enjoy!
The Student Surf Tour hosted their second event of the academic calendar this weekend at a blustery Tolcarne, Newquay. Universities from around the country, which included Swansea Met, UWE, UWIC, Bournemouth, AUCB, Falmouth, Cardiff, Staffordshire, Bath and Plymouth challenged the howling on shore winds to whittle the field down to two champions.
Men's Finalists were Sam Coad and Tom Perkins (Both Plymouth), Swansea Met's very own Zak Lawton and Gordan Fontaine of Bournemouth. The thirty minute final saw Gordon come out on top, Sam in second, Zak took third while Tom took a respectable fourth. Gordan had yet another surfboard to carry up the infamous Tolcarne steps, a Skindog 6'0 Dumpster courtesy of Ben Skinner's Skindog Surfboards.
The Women's Final saw newcomer Ariana De-domething-double-barrelled-de-Alexandre-sans-serif from UWE pitched against SST Regular Charlotte Bayliss (Cardiff), Julie Royer (Cardiff) and Newquay local Holly Donnelly surfing on behalf of Plymouth. Ariana took fourth place in her first ever surf competition, and was stoked to have reached the final! Julie came third place and enjoyed the surfing so much she surfed right through the awards ceremony. Charlotte narrowly missed out on first place, which was awarded to Plymouth's Holly Donnelly. She went home with a brand new wetsuit courtesy of Gul Watersports.
Student Surf Tour event organisers would like to thank judges Kerry Powell, Andy Sturt, Joe Davies and David Renyard for thier hard work over the weekend, as well as Llyr and Occy from Era for keeping us all healthy and safe.
The event was made possible through the support of Relentless Energy Drink, Gul Watersports, Dogcam, Skindog Surfboards, Adams Surfboards, RobieRobes and Era Water Safety Cover.
This event was hosted by Student Surf Tour limited and the SST HQ was kindly leant to us by Cornwall College Newquay at the Tolcarne facilities. “Young, dumb and full of… come on now, there’s children present. The new ‘Youth Issue’ of Wavelength is out in the shops now, and quite frankly, working on it has slightly dampened my dreams of ever winning the World Tour. OK, so a guy who is, like, way older than me, may have won it last year, but hot on his freakish heels are three teenagers who are separately being hailed as the best surfers in the world. John John Florence graces our cover and won the Pipe Masters in December, Gabriel Medina had an amazing year on tour and is destined to be crowned champ someday soon, but Kolohe Andino is also turning heads and could be the outside favourite to win the CT first. Tim Nunn gives us his tips on who to put your money on.
Thankfully, here in the UK we have some seriously impressive teen surfers coming up the ranks too. This issue, we kind of got a bit obsessed with the thumping waves of Portugal, and took two very different groups of the best British groms to show us what they’ve got in the hollow training grounds. We also hear three disturbing stories from a winter in Ireland, meet one of the UK’s youngest shapers, talk ‘old school’ with a 12 year-old style-master, get the behind the scenes story on the Bristol Wavegarden, and give you some alternative travel arrangements that will make you feel ten years younger! In fact, the latest issue of Wavelength is guaranteed to make you look younger than plastic surgery or a bucket of Oil of Ulay*… Buy a copy now before it’s too late! (*we cannot guarantee this)”

This is the “HUMMER.” It has been built for small summer waves but the combination of design elements in this model allow the board to function well in bigger surf. I have found the perfect combination of variables by increasing the depth of the concaves and relaxing the rocker. The fuller outline shape and forward width makes it easier to catch waves and it’s pulled in tail adds drive out of turns and carries speed through flat sections. It is definitely one of the most popular and exciting boards in the range.
CHD boards are based in the Ocean Magic factory just outside Newquay. We are an experienced and talented team and we all surf which means that research and development happens naturally. If you would like to benefit from many years of surfing and shaping experience, feel free to pop in to discuss your requirements. Making a well informed choice when it comes to your equipment will definitely maximize your surfing potential.
To win this CHD surfboard all you have to do is answer the simple question below. Post to the address at the front of the mag or email to
