Long Beach, Long Island, NY (September 6, 2011) -- The highly anticipated $1million Quiksilver Pro New York surf event began in Long Beach, Long Island today and the world's top 34 ranked surfers took to the waves.

World No.1 KELLY SLATER, competing on the East Coast for the first time in an ASP World Tour event, didn't disappoint. A huge, New York crowd turned out to see the 10X world champ in action against one of their own: 20-year-old wildcard BALARAM STACK.

Stack opted for high-flying aerial moves that he unfortunately couldn't close on, while Slater patiently hunted down the better-shaped waves that enabled a full performance.  Slater advanced directly to round 3, while Stack will need to survive the man-on-man second round eliminations.

Australia's JOEL PARKINSON was the first to test the New York waters today, opening up the competition against Brett Simpson (USA) and Travis Logie (South Africa). He posted a comfortable win and advanced directly to round three along with other Australians TAJ BURROW and JOSH KERR. Kerr logged the highest heat score of the day - 18.57 out of 20 for an incredible display of aerial surfing.

Brazil's HEITOR ALVES relegated 2-time world champ MICK FANNING (Australia) and wildcard ASHER NOLAN (FL, USA) to the second round with a determined performance.

French surfer JEREMY FLORES advanced ahead of GABE KLING (USA) with plenty of room to move after DANE REYNOLDS (USA) sat the heat out. Reynolds is nursing a rip injury and later announced he is withdrawing. Hawaii's KEANU ASING, who placed second in the trials earlier this week, will take his place.

HURRICANE KATIA continues her march up the East Coast and waves will continue to rise throughout the week. Organizers anticipate waves of up to 8 feet for Thursday and Friday.
