Boardmasters is well under way, but who are these guys and girls, what makes them tick, why are they here...?
Here are 20 of the most important questions you're dying to ask some of the People of Boardmasters 2012!
Â
Here we have Mark 'Egor' Harris, Newquay lifeguard, pro surfer, wetsuit connoisseur and... um-bungo fan from Congo.
We're getting the impression some of these athletes are taking this interview very seriously. Could be down to the lack of waves...?!
Â
Â

Mark ‘Egor’ Harris

Â
2. Where are you from?
Deep in the middle of the Congo
Â
3. Where do you live currently?
Newquay, Cornwall
Â
4. What do you do for a living?
I usually Pick passion fruit and mandarins and caboodle them all into packets
Â
5. Why are you here?
Dancing the dirty tango in the Boardmasters Shortboard division…
6. Have you surfed in Britain before?
Yes, 2002 UK Pro Surf Tour Champion!
Â
7. What do you think of British surf?
It doesn’t have the sun, fun and goodness of the jungle but I love it, when it’s good, it’s really good. As good as any European spot.
Â
8. Are you looking forward to the competition?
Ye, I cant wait to get in the water. Boardmasters is always a great comp and a great festival. I can’t wait to party at the weekend. Make sure you join me for some beers!
Â
9. What surfboard will you ride in the competition?
The new Gul Viper 3/2mm in Bright Red. Super comfy and flexible, still keeps me warm in these British waters.
Â
9a. Same question but without trying to please your wetsuit sponsor?
I’ll be riding a piece of wood encased in a hand shaped foam core covered in a solid fiberglass outer shell
Â
10. If you won the event, how would you celebrate?
Crack open a crate of vintage Um-Bongo, and invite all the competitors over for a post comp party! (If I don’t win I expect the real winner to do the same)
Â
11. If you won the event, how would you spend the prize money?
Get a plane back home to the Congo and buy a new silk hammock
Â
12. What is your favorite surf spot?
Surfing in Scotland during the filming of ‘The Endless Winter’ brought us some great waves. I can’t wait to go back. www.theendlesswinter.co.uk
Â
13. Do you have a blog?
Not at the moment, I am super busy and just don’t have time to write it all down. I'm going to be ripping it at some big comps this year so keep a look out, I might just get one started.
Â
14. What do you want to be when you grow up?
A hippo, Rhino or maybe a parrot
Â
15. What are you scared of?
Phythons
Â
16. What is your favourite après surf beverage?
Tough choice, Im gonna have to say… Rum-Bongo. It’s a strong mix of Rum and Um-Bongo. Not for the faint hearted.
Â
17. If sharks were land animals, who would win in a fight between a land-shark and a tiger and why?
Good question, my best friend was a tiger he took a real beating from a land shark last summer. But I have faith in him, Tony would knock his pointy shark teeth out nowadays.
18. Explain why aeroplanes can stay in the air in less than 10 words:
Fluid mechanics, Momentum + Thrust + angled ailerons = lift + drag
Â
19. Do you like cheese?
No I like apricot, guava, mango, passion fruit and mandarin
Â
20. How and why are you competing as Congo in this years Boardmasters?!
Well, COG doesn't mean Congo... Not in these parts.
