Tow-lovers Andrew Cotton and Al Mennie are set to have their relationship re-kindled after the pair received an invite to the Nelscott Reef Tow-in Classic, in Oregan USA. I must admit, I did have concerns about the partnership. I don't remember the last time I saw them merrily flinging each other into behemoth lumps of ocean, and I feared a wedge had been driven between them both after our dismal summer - and its endless dribble of miniature waves. I caught up with Cotty for a quick natter about his chances, coming back from injury and his bro Al Mennie. Well done on getting invited again, when's the holding period? It's already open. It started on the 1st of October and closes at the end of December. Is this a chance to re-kindle your love affair with Al Mennie? Re-kindle? It never died! I think it should be a rather nice romantic break though. How do you think you'll fair? It's hard to say really, this will be our 3rd international contest so we kind of know what to expect. We're stoked to even get an invite but to get a decent result would be amazing. Your knee isn't 100% at the moment, explain what happened? Yeah, I have a little knee problem at the moment which sort of comes with old age. You know how it is! I've been working hard to get it back to normal and having a lot of physiotherapy so I figure it should be fine. You've now got an orthopaedic shoe-styled leg brace, how does it affect your surfing? I only wear it to get attention I'm sort of reinventing myself you know make people feel a little sorry for myself, like "ah poor lad at least he's having a go" some people grow facial hair and change there style of clothes I decided to wear a knee brace. Can you explain how the judging works at a tow comp? It's much like a normal contest really but you get slightly scored up on the bigger waves. It mostly comes from standard comp scoring where you get rated for turns and barrels. Who do you cite as the favourites? There's some big names in there this year so it's difficult to hedge my bets on anyway. I reckon Twiggy and Greg Long are among the favouites, those boys are so tapped into it. Dilema for you: if we're on a trip and they call the comp on, where will your priorities lie? Nelscott all the way mate, I'm frothing for it. Thanks a million.
The confirmed teams for the Nelscott comp are as follows: Al Mennie-Andrew Cotton Jeff Schmucker-Josiah Schmucker Tyler Smith-Russel Smith Zach Wormhoudt-Jake Wormhoudt Kealii Mamala-Garrett McNamara Tim West-Ion Banner Peter Mel-Jamie Mitchell Ross Clarke Jones-Tom Carroll Jeff Kafka-Benji Darrow Luiz Jardini-Scott Eggers Greg Long-Twiggy Baker Mike Parsons-Brad Gerlach Jeremy Rasmussen-Tom Miller Mark Healey-Rusty Long Tarik BenHammou- Abdel El Harim Jed Kelly-Tony Perez
