The Relentless Boardmasters got underway on thursday in fun 3-4 feet surf and saw strong performances from the British contingent. The result of the day went to home boy Alan Stokes who fended off a tactical assault from former champion Antonio Bartoletto. Stokesy narrowly edged him with an overall of 10.57 to Antonio's 8.67 and it seemed local knowledge paid dividends when the Newquay man resisted the temptation of sitting on the inside waiting for re-forms. It was a game plan that failed for Bartoletto, which as a consequence saw Stoker book his place in the quarters.

All other Brit hopes now rest on Russ Winter, who is a gnat's wing away from booking his place alongside Stoker in the quarters today when he faces Irish, Aussie Glen Hall. Frustratingly, the likes of Sam Lamiroy and Reubin Pearce fell to the emerging talents of Wiggoly Dantas and John John Florence respectively in a tightly contested round 4. The swell today has dropped - however, low tide should produce some fun waves, as well as providing us with some respite to ease our eager anticipation. We here at the 'Length are gearing up for a Winter / Stokes final. Keep those gnawed fingers crossed!
