Are you ready to be a world champion?
Substandard surfers from across the globe will be packing their boards this summer to head to the Mecca of surf that is Cornwall.
Despite being one of the more eccentric contests in the global surf movement, the World Crapsurfing Championships has a loyal following of contestants and spectators from more than 17 countries.
Renowned poet and wretched wave rider Murray Lachlan Young said: “The idea of a world championships for bad surfers was hatched when, after years of practising, I realised I was still a terrible surfer. And being a bad surfer meant that I missed out on the thrill of the surf championship.”
Thus was born CrapSurfer - a fun, international movement for surfers of all abilities to express their love of surfing, in a relaxed and non-elitist, social network.
The first World Championships of CrapSurfing was held in 2007, and was an instant success. It was judged by a world champion kick boxer, a former surf champion and a local undertaker.
Cornish surfer Louise Frost was crowned World Crapsurfing Champion with an appalling display of wave control that led one judge to label her the ‘Eddie the Eagle of surfing’.
This year’s championships are being organised by fellow CrapSurfer Nigel Pengelly. Nigel has surfed at Puerto Escondido, Mexico; Malibu, California and Byron Bay, Australia, where he soon got to know local lifeguards on first name terms. Nigel is believed to be the first person in the UK to be granted a water-ASBO, effectively banning him from the sea on good wave days.
“This year’s championships will be the biggest and best yet. We have more competition categories, more celebrities and a cool after-event party,” said Nigel.
The championship categories include: crap paddling, crap pop up (getting onto the board), number of missed waves, unwittingly doing something good, accidentally swallowing seawater and crap board control.
Out of the water, prizes are to be awarded for the worst wetsuit, worst surfboard, worst beach strut, worst beach bum, Miss CrapSurfer and the worst surfmobille.
A CrapSurfers Ball will take place at the Sand Bar, Praa Sands, and features a children’s poetry show, awards ceremony, live music from the skiffle-tastic Flats and Sharps, warm up DJ Kellie Slater who will be busting out a set of surftastic hits from the Beach Boys to the Tornadoes finishing off with superstar DJ Ry Spenceley. There will also be a free surf simulator for those who didn’t get enough practice in the sea.
A percentage of the profits from the event will go to the RNLI.
The World Crapsurfing Championships and Crapsurfer’s Ball takes place on Saturday, September 24, at Praa Sands, Cornwall.
