OVER 100 HISTORICAL SURFBOARDS FROM THE 30’S TO THE 80’S EXPECTED AT UK’S FIRST EVER VINTAGE SURF MEET......

The largest ever gathering of historic surfboards to be seen in the UK, and the first ever Vintage Surfboard Meet to be held, will take place on the morning of Sunday 26th June at Lusty Glaze Car Park in Newquay.

Between 9.30am and 12 noon well over 100 boards will be on show from private collections across the UK, as well as some significant boards from the soon to be opened Museum of British Surfing This will be an unforgettable opportunity to see the very evolution of surfboards and surfing in Britain mapped out in one place.

Boards will range from the wooden bellyboards of the 30s, 40s and 50s to the first fibreglass longboards of the 60s. Then the transition to experimental 6ft singlefins and twin fins at the end of the 60s, into the artful tints and logos of the 70s and then another time of change, the 80s, which heralded neon twin fins to quads to thrusters and more.

There will be notable boards by legendary UK surfer/ shapers including Rod Sumpter, Chris Jones, John Conway, Roger Cooper, Tris Cokes, Chops Lascalles, Steve Harewood, Tim Heyland and many more.

In addition legends from the 60s and 70s have been invited including Chris Jones, Roger Mansfield and Rod Sumpter.

Alasdair Lindsay, enthusiast and event organiser commented: “There has never been a gathering like this in the UK, it is a rare chance to see beautiful, historical and culturally important surfboards that are usually tucked away out of view in private collections.”

“Although the Meet is more about showing boards and meeting fellow enthusiasts there will no doubt also be some vintage boards for sale or swap,” Alasdair continued “so for any interested in starting a collection it will be an excellent opportunity for people to come along and chat to owners and get a feel for what sort of boards are available.”

“We are also hoping that this gathering may also inspire old surfers to come along and share their stories, and if anyone should have an old board tucked away please dust it off and bring it along. Anyone with a Pre 1990s board in any condition is welcome and the event is totally free.”
