It was a great start to the UK & Ireland series of this years King of the Groms, with the first stop of three taking place this past weekend in Porthcawl, Wales. With small conditions and sunny weather, contest director and team rider Mark Vaughan held off the event until the afternoon to ensure competitors had the best conditions available. The Groms were stoked to be part of a great event and kicked off with a tag team to warm up during the waiting period. With conditions quickly improving the U14 Boys and U16 Girls surfed a marathon of heats and were, no doubt, grateful to be having an 11.30 check in on the following day!

On the Sunday, once again waiting on the tide for the best surf, the event kicked off at 2pm with the quarter finals of the Under 14's followed by the Under 16 Girl's and Under 16 Boys.

Standouts were Quiksilver rider Max Payne who was showing great form throughout the weekend making both finals along with local ripper Arran Bright. They showed the crowd how to make the most of the 2ft onshore conditions. With small left handers, Max was getting the length of ride and being a goofy footer showed off some great surfing, but in the end Arran had the bigger moves, laying down a solid gouge backed up by a succession of snaps, to clinch the title. Finishing a close 3rd was, the stylish, Max Pechonis and Nathanial James finished up with 4th.

In the Under 14's final more great surfing from all four surfers, Cieren Hughes ripping all the way to the final but coming up short of a good wave to walk away with 3rd. 4th went to mini ripper George Hudson who looks like one to watch in the future. In the end, it was Arran Bright and Max Payne fighting for 1st place. This time Max outscored Arran thanks to his polished and critical surfing.

The girl’s final there was little separating the four young rippers. It came down to the dying seconds to decide who would take the win. Angharad John (daughter of legendary British surfer Linda Sharp) and Emily Williams were the two battling for top spot, but as the horn blew it was Emily who came out on top with Angharad having to settle for 2nd place. Georgia Hodges and Millie little can be proud of their performances finishing 3rd and 4th respectively.
