Sponsors, organisers and volunteers are currently in the process of finalising all the last minute details for the Breaking the Barrier surf camp dedicated to children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder – the first of its kind in the UK, at Bigbury Bay South Devon this coming Saturday (8th September).

Sponsors, organisers and volunteers are currently in the process of finalising all the last minute details for the Breaking the Barrier surf camp.
Sponsored by locally based charity, Lifeworks and the UKs leading surfing charity Surf Relief UK (SRUK), ‘Breaking the Barrier’ is an opportunity for surfing instructors from across the country to increase their knowledge and experience of  coaching Autistic children, working in partnership with a team of four experienced surf instructors from the US.

Elliot Zuckerman from the Surf2Live surf school based in Long Island New York will be flying in with his team to work alongside the UK instructors in order to provide this unique opportunity. With help from event supporters O’Neil, White Stuff, Nike and Discovery Surf School 100 autistic children will be given a free opportunity to experience the sport of surfing.

The event will run from 9.00am to 5.00pm on Saturday 8th of September at Bigbury Bay South Devon. It is hoped that with the support from the surfing community and industry this will become an annual event providing opportunities around the country for disabled children to experience the sport of surfing.

Chairman of SRUK, Dave Manley says – 'the aim of this event and SRUK is to give disadvantaged young people the chance to try the sport we are all so passionate about. Surfing provides a unique experience which will stay with these children for life and I hope that this is the start of an annual event that will give many more disabled young people the same opportunity.'

Liz Leader from Lifeworks says – 'This event is a real first. Opportunities for Autistic Children and Young People to experience the exciting sport of surfing are rare. This is a fantastic chance to provide a day out for children and their carers giving them a new experience. At the same time the event will help develop the skills of UK surf instructors in order to provide a network of surfing opportunities for disabled young people across the country.'
