In spite of Mother Nature putting her stick in the ASP’s spokes on Saturday when the aftermath of the Chile earthquake threatened a Tsunami, the Quik Pro returned again today with bells on. Current World No.11 Jordy Smith grabbed the headlines with the highest heat score of the day – a worthy 17.86 out of 20. The lofty Saffa, fresh out of the studio after crooning with the band Goldsmith, kicked off his campaign with a slothful start in round 1, only managing a meagre 2nd place and score of 9.10 after tour virgin Dusty Payne took 1st place with an unimpressive 11.70. However, according to Smith it was intended. Apparently scores come before steez; "You always want to try to impress the crowd and whoever's watching but you just got to slow it down sometimes and just try to get the scores, I just surf like 70% or 80% and then, in the later rounds, I just give everything." Meanwhile, Dane did his best to show the ever-raucous crowd of on-lookers by delivering a death blow to tour rookie Blake Thornton after he bagged a 17.33.
