Is it any wonder why Bede Durbidge is ranked 3rd in the world? PHOTO: © ASP / SCHOLTZ

The missus is all too aware of my ineptitude in the D.I.Y department and to my relief will only let me do the simple things, like when we painted our walls the other night - she did all the intricate work around the edges while I got all messy with the big roller and covered the large spaces. She knows that if something fiddly needs doing, whether it’s hanging up a picture, grouting around the bath or using Polyfiller – it isn’t a job for me and is better off doing it herself. However, in spite of that she is convinced that I’m ‘really good at assembling Ikea flat packs,’ which explains why last night, feeling mildly autistic, I spent the entire evening trying to assemble our new Hermmes bed side table. It took 3 hours in total and nearly ended up on the fire on two occasions; the first time when I had to take it apart after fitting everything back to front and the second, when the drawer wouldn’t fit in for exactly the same reasons. Eventually I finished my evening’s work and went to bed sometime later feeling frustrated and exhausted. Meanwhile, roughly at the moment I began drifting into a deep, undisturbed sleep the Quik Pro kicked into life again on the Goldie. All I can say is thank Jesus for the ASP and heats on demand, because while surf-wise it wasn’t exactly the kind of shit we have been treated to at Porthelven recently, round three was an interesting and entertaining lesson about regulars nipping the buds of rookies’; Slats was in fine form and put Patty G on his lap for a vicious spanking of bare bottom, local yokel Joel Parkinson owned new-boy Dusty Payne in their heat and was quick to pull out his pockets for the young Hawaiian to hold after scoring a 16.33 over 12.20, and Taj made wunder-kid Owen Wright look like editor Tim Nunn at the Chopes’ comp with a wild card. Only Dan Ross, bless him, had enough bounce to get one over his potentially very tricky match up; former World Champ’ CJ.
The stand out of the day, though, was Bede Durbidge who, with his near perfect 19.33 pissed all over Luke Munro’s pitiful 7.37 like Wayne Rooney shattering a primary school footy teams’ back four. What about The Euro Force I hear you ask? Close but no cigar – Jeremy could’ve end up facing Dan Ross but fell to Dane, while Tiago could’ve matched up with Slats, who will face Jordy instead. And who’s excited about that? I would be, but I won’t be watching it live because I have another Hermmes bed side table to build.
