Get a board with plenty of foam, mini mal or fun board, egg etc. Lots of people make them, go see a shaper and be honest about your abilities and where you are at. Get a decent wetty that will keep you warm, winter is cold! Boots gloves etc.

Once your progress you can always get a smaller board if you want, or bigger if you want a longboard. Don't learn on a toothpick, it may look cool to have a dinky pro board, but it won't help you.

If you learn through winter, you can reap the benefits of being up and riding in summer.

plenty of board guides, wetty guides on the Wavelength website.

Thanks man,

I've heard that it's better to start off with a longer board for stability etc...

but I hadn't heard about a 'mini mal' or about making sure it's foamy ^^

The more foam (volume) and bigger board makes it easier to catch waves and more stable to stand on. You could go straight onto getting a longboard if you want, a mini mal is bascially a condensed longboard with a lot of foam (volume).

The more waves you catch, the quicker you learn etc. It's all about having fun, if your not enjoying it. Why bother...

There is loads of boards such as mini mals, eggs, flying carpets that have loads of volume and are fun to ride.

Give Adrian at Fluid Juice a ring (shaper) from the previous link.

Don't get rail roaded into buying something thats not suitable for what you need. There is also plenty of 2nd hand, longboards and mini mals out there...

Enjoy

Thanks for that Jamal.

As far as winter wetsuits go, would this suit me?

5/3mm is def what you need for winter. Plus boots, gloves and hood, you can get wetties with attached hoods. This avoids getting flushed by cold water. The key factor are warmth and flexibity, if your cold, it's game over. So a decent 5/3 for winter is key, come spring you can get yourself a summer suit (3mm) and enjoy that exta flexibilty you have.

wetsuits are improving all the time, and they are not the suits of armour they were years ago. Get in there like swimwear, but save the swimwear til summer, even in blighty we get the odd boardshort day... enjoy
