My tuk-tuk driver ensconces himself in a shady spot while I head straight out to the pick of peaks, on the reef aptly called A-frames. The local surfers are messing about in front of Hikkaduwa surf scenes’ epicentre, a place called Mambo’s, and I think they all seem to work there. They’re making the most of the lack of tourists by huckin ollies and kick flips on an average wave, but its only meters from the bar should duty call. A family of Goat-boats are going left on the A-frame, while a South African, an Aussie bloke and myself trade stories between glassy 4ft waves on the right. I wish I’d worn a hat out to keep the sun burning my nose and ears off, because I could surf this wave all day. This is what Sri Lankan surfing is supposed to be about.
