Edge of the Earth Project 1.2 PDF Print E-mail

Reading station, how is it I always end up at Reading station in the middle of the night. Yep it is the change over station for Gatwick, but it seems to get a flight in the morning by train from Cornwall, you have to spend at least one creepy hour, alone, cold and slightly worried on platform three. It's not much fun, but it makes the inevitable sleep on the floor of the check in lounge at Gatwick a lot more pleasant.

BIG BIRD

So this is my new best friend and life companion big bird, like any normal heterosexual male in the society we live in I’ve tried having a girlfriend and thought about getting a dog or some sort of animal but haven’t had much success and I’m not to be trusted with anything too dependent on me as I learnt from the time I acquired a cat called ‘Velcro.’

At last, flight restrictions lifted, flights changed, ash receeding, now just got to haul ass to London which is always a pain from the wilds of Cornwall. Keep your eyes peeled, I'm going to update from the road for what is a full on web feature, in the meantime here is a shot of a Volcano in Iceland, not erupting, but looking mighty pretty in a midnight, mid summer sunset.

Last man standing, just fell PDF Print E-mail
Written by Tim Nunn
It's been pretty testing up in Scotland, a windy short period swell, ripped to pieces by a devil wind. First Sam Lamiroy fell this morning in a heat where finding the right wave was essential, unfortunately there were few. In the very next heat Russ Winter went in against Hawaiian power house Sunny Garcia and narrowly lost out to the Hawaiian, thus finishing third and facing the trek back to Cornwall early. Next up local hero Chris Noble entered the water, but with conditions in the very poor department he struggled to find a decent wave, as there simply were none and the standard barer for Scotland was eliminated. So it all fell to Alan Stokes, in a stacked heat he surfed as well as anyone out there and came second making him the only Brit in the round of 48. That's not a bad round to get to in a 6 star. However he was up against heavy hitters in the form of Brazos Bernardo Miranda and Raoni Monterio, in the tricky conditions he slipped out in third place. So the only man to cheer for now is Australian/Irish man Glenn Hall, the man known as Micro is worth cheering on, he has a solid chance of making the 'CT this year so keep your eyes peeled on the webcast tomorrow, at the very least Sam Lamiroy's now legendary commentating will keep you amused.

Frustration, I'm sweating on a cloud of volcanic ash, after spending a year pretty much office bound, I have come up with a plan to stretch the boundaries of surfing, surfing photography, adventure and the sort of people who get in this journal of modern surfing. All I want to do is to take you all to the very edge of where is possible to surf and once there, try and raise the performance level of surfers in and out of the water. My first trip, to a place which is about as wild as you can get is looking in jeopardy though. The Volcano in Iceland currently spewing it's guts out, is putting a years worth of planning to the test. I'm meant to be on a plane this week, but studying the movements and future movements of this dirty cloud, it looks unlikely I'll be going as soon as I want to. So the dilemma, do I change my ticket now, incur only twenty or so quid fee, or do I hang on and risk closer to a hundred. Doesn't really matter too much as long as I do make it to the first stop, a place close to hell, 'cept with waves.

Blue Sky Thinking PDF Print E-mail
Written by Greg Martin

Isn't it strange not having any planes in the sky today? A beautiful blue sky with no vapor trails cutting across it, no sound of jet engines, no distractions, just a big blue sky to stare up at and day dream. Maybe that's why they call it blue sky thinking...

Priceless convo' PDF Print E-mail

I’ve been having some random conversations with Cotty lately on Gmail chat. He just came out of surgery and will be out of action for a little bit and at the moment he is holed up at home with only his mum there to look after him. As you can imagine he is quite bored. Here a few from the past week – more to come, no doubt.

Scottish Power PDF Print E-mail

Yesterday was a good day for the Brits at the Highland Open at Brimms Ness. After Sam Lamiroy smoked his heat and came first, Scottish legend Chris Noble brought home the deep-fried bacon and spanked Ricardo Dos Santos and Croyde's Lyndon Wake to become the first local competitor to ever come through the first round of the Highland Open. In less than perfect conditions at one of Chris's favourite waves, he managed to find barrels where others struggled and in front of a crowd of flag bearing local supporters, had a dream heat, winning with a 10.40.

"It's only the first round," he said. "But it feels like I won the event or something! I think the difference this year was that there was no pressure on me. I have a kid now and we're expecting a second, so whereas surfing used to be the be-all-and-end-all for me, I now have different priorities so there is less pressure. I just get to go out there and have fun. I've surfed out here for about 10 years and even though I am used to the cold, I still have my earplugs in against the cold water and the wind."

The comp is on hold for now, but hopefully should resume at 16.30 today (Thursday 15th April.) As well as Lamiroy and Chris, previous winner of the Highland Open Russell Winter and Alan Stokes, as well as Aussie/Irishman Glenn Hall have yet to surf.

Fergal's March PDF Print E-mail
Written by Greg Martin

From where I was standing, March could easily have gone down as the worst month of surf I've seen in ages. I was frickin freezing and mainly flat... apart from where Fergal was... again. Check out his monthly video blog filmed by Allan Wilson with some of the highlights of his March. It's not going great so far, but I'm bloody determined to have a better April than him.
