Flowering Inferno: Dog With A Rope Review by Dan Bayfield Here we have another slice of sublime summer tunage from he always reliable Tru Thoughts label. The album Dog With A Rope comes from the band/collective project Flowering Inferno, which is one of the many guises of the ever evolving Will 'Quantic' Holland and his collaborators.
The first Flowering Inferno album, 2008's Death Of A Revolution, was a straight up reggae/dub affair, which worked within its own confines perfectly, and never failed to get people asking 'this is good, who's this?' when aired in clubs/parties/record shops. Dog With A Rope, the second offering, has thrown its net wider to include more worldly influences. Whilst still retaining a slight reggae/dub base, the songs are more akin to something to be found under one of the Buena Vista Social Club related releases, or else one of Will Hollands own other projects (such as the Quantic Soul Orchestra's 'Tropidelico', or else 'Tradition in Transition' by Quantic and his Combo Barbaro). This is not really a criticism as I can't fault the record in itself, I just feel it would have better suited being released under one of his other project titles instead. (Basically, I LOVED the dubbyness of the first release and really wanted more of the same, only better!) That being said, when someone is as prolific a writer/producer/performer as Mr Quantic, it's not surprising there will be some crossover between projects. Best described as a Tropical Soundclash; part Cuban, part Puerto Rican, part Columbian, it's an ideal album for the summer months. 10 tracks and 45 minutes of pure enjoyment. Either stick it on your mp3 to accompany you on your summer surf trips, or else play it loudly whilst you and your mates sip oversized cocktails with fruit and umbrellas in a garden somewhere. There's no way your neighbours will complain about the music. Infact, they'll probably grab some rum & ginger beer (Morgan Spiced and Old Jamaican is the best combo!) and come over and join you.
