It’s time to grab your ginger wigs and tartan wet suits and head north, far north to the small Scottish fishing village of Thurso in Caithness for the beginning of the O’Neil Highland Open which will be taking place between April 13 and the 19th.
The salty porridge and freezing water make this 6-star WQS event something special, it’s not just the perfect right hander that reels down the kelp covered flag stone reef that will attract the competitors, it’s the fact that this is the most northerly bash on the contest calendar and the winner will take home twenty five thousand US dollars and raise the converted, Chieftain, a double-handed, Medieval Scottish war sword.
The world class surf has been a savage battle ground over the years and will once again be privy to wave worriers such as former ASP World Champion Sunny Garcia (Oahu, HAW) and previous event winners Adam Robertson (Victoria, AUS) and Russell Winter(Cornwall, GBR).
This is all very Brave Heart I know, but O’Neil have been committed to hosting events off the beaten track for the last ten years or so, kicking off with the ‘Deep Jungle Open’ in Nias, Sumatra. So if watching some of the best surfers in the world tear apart some of the coldest waves in the world, pencil this into your diary and head north, far north. All results, news, photos and videos will be available at www.aspeurope.com
