Karma To Burn - Live 2009 Reunion Tour DVD

Review by Dan Bayfield

What we have here is 3 hours and 2 minutes of pure non-stop rifferama from the current kings of stoner groove-laden rock. Karma To Burn were previously active from 1996-2002, releasing 3 albums proper, before each member went on to other musical projects (most notably drummer Rob Oswald who played with both Mondo Generator and Nebula).

Aside from the first album, which featured vocals at the insistance of unadventurous record execs, K2B are an instrumental 3 piece delivering monolithic slabs of stoner rock in the vein of Sabbath, Kyuss, Orange Goblin, Fu Manchu, Scissorfight and High On Fire. Incidentally, if you dont know any of these bands they are all well worth investigating too. John Garcia from Kyuss even sang with them for a short while, though I'm not sure of any commercially available recordings of this. And Neil Fallon from Clutch makes a brief appearance on the dvd singing 'La Grange'.

Currently reformed, recording a new album (with Kyuss' Scott Reeder at the helm) and touring mainland Europe throughout April, this dvd offers an impressive 3 hrs of tuneage, and with perhaps only about 5 minutes of backstage footage and minimal dialogue inbetween songs, you know its all about the music.

As well as 19 professionally filmed tracks from one main show during the 2009 (and ongoing) reunion, we also get another 4 from this era, 7 from their incendiary performance at the Dynamo festival in '97, 10 bootlegs from '97-'99 (all with great sound and very good visuals), a music video for the track '20' (oh yeah, all their songs after the first album are titled numerically!) and two new audio only recordings of the classic tracks '20' + '30'.

The general sound quality is so good and loud it almost broke the speakers on my t.v., then I got drunk watching the dvd and almost broke the t.v. myself from sheer excitement and Rock 'n' Roll excesses that drink and great music inspire in me.
