Llantwit Major. photo Greg Martin Today, 1st March, is St David's Day... the patron saint of Wales. Born of a cliff edge during a violent storm, David is probably best known for his monastic rule and his preaching of abstinence, rather than his surfing, which he kept on the down low.
But records show that David spent his early life studying under Saint Illtud at his monastery in Llantwit Major. It is perhaps slightly speculative on our part, but it seems very unlikely that a man as wise as Saint David would have overlooked the empty lineup of Llantwit, seeing the sweet A-frame peak and the famous 'Left', and not jumped in for a few sneaky waves. So join with us in celebrating St David's Day and paying tribute to the father of Welsh surfing, a legend second only to PJ himself.
